“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.” — Wilma Rudolph, Olympic track and field athlete
February is Black History Month (BHM); it’s a time to celebrate and honor Black people’s contributions, achievements, and culture in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide.
BHM was officially recognized in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, who urged everyone to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
The month also draws attention to some of the more difficult historical periods Black people faced.
Each year, BHM has a new theme, which offers people something specific to learn more about and celebrate. Annual themes highlight the lasting impact Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more.
There are many steps you can take to support Black leaders, their businesses, and communities throughout the month and beyond, including:
- Shop at Black-owned businesses. There are a variety of resources available to help identify local Black-owned businesses, including:
- Increasing visibility of Black-owned businesses is key. Use your influence to leave reviews on websites such as Google and Yelp, sharing your positive experiences at Black-owned businesses. And engage your personal networks to help extend your reach.
- Ensure Black professionals are included in your networking events and group meetings. Help new and existing Black business owners grow their professional network and customer base.
- Serve as a matchmaker among your professional circles. Create opportunities for Black leaders to share their skills and passions with others of the same industry and vice versa.
Here are other fun and educational resources available to help you celebrate BHM:
- There is a digital “searchable museum” at the Smithsonian’s Natural Museum of African American History and Culture.
- Confetti’s Black History Month collection offers fun and informative activities that your coworkers can participate in remotely.
Remember, you can celebrate Black history anytime by promoting meaningful activities and supporting your Black coworkers all year long. Happy Black History Month!
